German driver sentenced to three years in prison for accident killing two Vietnamese brothers

On 16/9, the Frankfurt Regional Court sentenced Mohammad S., 24, to three years in prison after he drove a car into three Vietnamese individuals in July 2025 and failed to assist the victims.

The incident resulted in the deaths of 23-year-old twin brothers Nguyen Duy Quang and Nguyen Quang Minh. Their friend, Hoang Trung Hieu, 27, known as TikToker 'Bop', sustained severe injuries.

Mohammad was convicted of attempted murder to conceal a crime, due to his failure to assist the victims, along with two counts of involuntary manslaughter.

The accident occurred on Mainzer Landstraße, Frankfurt, in the early morning of 6/7/2025. According to the indictment, the Syrian-born man drove at 75 km/h after using laughing gas on the night of 5/7, exceeding the 50 km/h speed limit. While driving in the city, the car suddenly veered into the bike lane, colliding with two electric scooters within seconds.

The twin brothers shared one scooter. One died at the scene, while the other passed away a few hours later in the hospital. Hoang Trung Hieu, riding a separate scooter, was thrown onto the car's hood, but the driver continued, causing the victim to fall onto the road.

After the accident, Mohammad did not stop but continued driving, attempting to conceal the damaged car. Following a phone call with his father, he returned to the scene and surrendered to the police.

In February, Mohammad was indicted on charges of murder and involuntary manslaughter.

During the trial, Hieu's lawyer demanded the defendant pay at least 300,000 euro for emotional damages and a lifelong periodic payment. Hieu suffered severe injuries in the accident, was in a coma for about one month, and required a lower leg amputation. He attended the courtroom in a wheelchair.

Throughout the trial, Mohammad kept his head down, crying when the victims were mentioned. The defendant and his family provided significant compensation and offered further restitution.

Before the verdict, the defendant expressed deep remorse and sought forgiveness. The mother of the two deceased victims did not accept the apology, while Hieu stated he forgave the driver.

The presiding judge acknowledged the incident as an accident, a tragedy where all involved suffered loss.

According to the ruling, the court determined the incident was an accident caused by driving error, not an intentional act of driving into the victims. The defendant was also not found to be under the influence of stimulants at the time of the collision.

The court agreed with experts that the defendant experienced severe shock from the accident, causing him to continue driving for about 10 minutes. The judges concluded that the defendant's wrongdoing lay in his failure to call for aid after that 10-minute period.

After assessing the defendant's degree of criminal culpability, while considering his remorse and compensation efforts, the judge sentenced Mohammad to three years in prison. The verdict is not yet legally binding.
