The incident occurred in La Matanza, Buenos Aires, on 15/9. Diego received a late-night call from his 66-year-old mother-in-law, who lived alone a few blocks away. She told him that her security camera had captured a burglar prying open her back door with a crowbar.
She had called the police, but they hadn't arrived, so she urged Diego to come quickly, as she was terrified.
Diego immediately drove to her house and discovered two burglars. Hearing him arrive, they fled, but not before grabbing a bag from his mother-in-law's car containing important documents.
Diego and several neighbors gave chase. "I demanded he return the documents he stole from my mother-in-law's car, and he yelled at me that he wasn't giving anything back," Diego said.
The group pursued the burglar for 15 blocks before finally catching him.
Videos circulating on social media show the burglar's feet tied to Diego's truck as he was dragged 200 meters along the road.
"Stop, man," the burglar pleaded, while neighbors cheered and shouted, "Don't steal from anyone anymore."
Diego is now under investigation by district prosecutors and the police for his violent actions. Regarding the burglary, police claim it was a "misunderstanding" and the suspect had no such intention.
The man Diego dragged, though injured, declined to file a complaint. "He refused to provide further information or accept assistance and left the scene on his own," police stated.
Meanwhile, Diego expressed his frustration, explaining that his mother-in-law was so traumatized by the incident that she had to move in with someone else. "My mother-in-law is on dialysis, suffers from osteoarthritis, and is waiting for a bone graft. Yet, he treated this poor elderly woman so cruelly. She was terrified by that jerk," he said.
The investigation is ongoing.
