The incident occurred on the evening of 24/2 in Buxar city, Bihar state. While performing traditional rituals next to the groom, 18-year-old Aarti Kumari was shot in the abdomen by a masked man. The attacker climbed onto the stage from among the guests. Initially, loud music obscured the gunshot, but moments later, the bride collapsed, causing panic.

Aarti was immediately transported to a nearby hospital. After initial treatment, doctors transferred her to the Varanasi Trauma Center due to her critical condition. Police have since confirmed that Aarti’s health has stabilized.
The gunman was identified as Deenbandhu, a neighbor of the bride. According to a local resident, Deenbandhu had been in a romantic relationship with Aarti for the past two years, despite her father stating the pursuit was unrequited.
The wedding procession, originating from Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh state, promptly returned home. The groom's family has since refused to proceed with the marriage. They stated, "Had we known about any affair or a lover, we would never have come here. That bullet could also have hit the groom."
Aarti’s father confirmed Deenbandhu’s unrequited pursuit of his daughter. He voiced deep concern for Aarti’s future, questioning, "Even if my daughter survives, who will marry her?" This was not Deenbandhu’s first attempt to disrupt Aarti’s wedding. One year ago, he threatened the groom's family when her marriage was first arranged, leading to the cancellation of the engagement.

Following the previous incident, villagers held a council meeting and expelled Deenbandhu from the village, but he continued to harass Aarti. Deenbandhu is now in police custody. Authorities noted he was previously jailed in an alcohol-related case. Police are investigating the source of the weapon and the exact motive behind the shooting.
