Man murders 'common-law wife' over jealousy

Nguyen Viet Thanh, 38, allegedly ambushed and killed his 'common-law wife' after their breakup, upon discovering she was seeing another man.

Dong Thap Provincial Police detained Nguyen Viet Thanh, 38, from Thoai Son commune, An Giang, on 25/2 for investigation into murder.

The investigation revealed that Thanh and Ms. Hoa, 43, from An Phuoc commune, Dong Thap province, had lived together as common-law spouses. Around last november, Ms. Hoa ended their relationship, but Thanh persisted in contacting her. He later moved to Tam Nong, Dong Thap, renting a room there.

On the evening of 24/2, upon discovering Ms. Hoa was involved with another man, Thanh hid a knife in his motorbike's storage compartment and drove to her house. He then hid his motorbike in a bush and waited by the side of the house with the knife.

About half an hour later, when Ms. Hoa returned home with another man, Thanh suddenly lunged out and stabbed her multiple times. The woman, frightened, tried to flee but tripped and fell. Thanh continued the assault until she lay motionless.

After the attack, Thanh turned himself in to communal police. Ms. Hoa was rushed to the emergency room but died at the hospital.

*Victim's name has been changed.
