Pham Huu Phuoc, 45, was sentenced to life in prison on 4/9 by the Tay Ninh Provincial People's Court for murder. He was also ordered to pay over 240 million VND in compensation for funeral expenses, emotional distress, and child support for the victim's two children until they reach adulthood.
The court determined that despite being sober and aware that his intoxicated friend was only joking, Phuoc acted with malice and murdered him, warranting a severe penalty.

Phuoc, who has a 5th-grade education and works as a laborer, has two prior convictions for intentional injury.
On the evening of 18/2/2024, Phuoc was at home when his friend and neighbor, Le Minh Tan, invited him for a drink. Phuoc declined, so Tan drank alone. Later that night, Tan, feeling tired, lay down in a hammock and began arguing with Phuoc for refusing to join him. When Tan put his hand in his pocket, Phuoc asked him what he was doing. Tan jokingly replied, "I'll shoot you." Phuoc then ran to the kitchen, grabbed a knife, and stabbed Tan multiple times. The victim stumbled to the door and collapsed. Phuoc left the knife on the table, changed his blood-stained clothes, and went to bed.
The next morning, Phuoc attempted to drag his friend's body further into the house but was unable to. He then informed the victim's family and turned himself in.
