Man who attacked 5 people at Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital sentenced to 15 years in prison

Ban Van Vy, 30, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for attacking 5 people with a knife at Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, claiming he committed the crime in a fit of anger, believing medical staff disrespected his family.

On 13/8, the Nghe An Provincial People's Court sentenced Vy, residing in Luc Son commune, Bac Ninh province, for murder, according to Article 123 of the Penal Code.

During the trial, Vy cited his difficult circumstances and young children, requesting a reduced sentence. The victims were not present, but one person submitted a petition for a lighter sentence for the defendant.

According to the indictment, on 17/10/2025, Vy's wife gave birth to twins at Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital. On 23/10/2025, one infant, in poor health, was transferred to emergency care for monitoring.

Seeing his wife's aunt crying in the hallway out of pity for the infant, Vy thought doctors and nurses had scolded his family, making him angry. Upon entering the hospital room, he saw his wife holding a child, while medical staff Nguyen Thi Nhung cared for the two twin infants nearby. Vy took a fruit knife from a cabinet and attacked Ms. Nhung. Realizing what was happening, others in the room grabbed the infants and ran out.

Vy then lifted one infant high, walked towards the bathroom window, and shouted, "I'll kill". A relative of a new mother managed to wrestle the infant from Vy's hands.

When the infant was handed to nurse Tran Thi Hong, Vy attacked her with the knife, then pursued and attacked Ms. Phan Thi Tu, causing serious injuries.

Vy took another knife from his wife's handbag, ran to the nurses' station, stabbed Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Hoai, injuring her, and then continued to attack Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Trang.

According to the forensic report, Ms. Trang suffered 40% bodily harm, the most severe among the victims. Ms. Thuy sustained 6% harm, Ms. Tu and Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhung both 3%, and Ms. Hoai 1%.

At the trial, Vy claimed he suspected medical staff disrespected his family, leading to inadequate care for his twins compared to other children. He also alleged a medical staff member asked him for money and wished ill upon his children. Vy could not provide evidence for these claims.

"I lost my composure because I loved my children and felt pity for my wife," Vy stated.
