Mother abandons 3-year-old son, leading to his death

Tran Thi Hong Nhung and her boyfriend were sentenced for abandoning her 3-year-old son in front of an orphanage, resulting in his death.

On 17/9, Tran Thi Hong Nhung, 26, and her boyfriend Nguyen Vu An, 28, were sentenced by the People's Court of Tay Ninh Province to three years and six months, and two years and six months respectively, for involuntary manslaughter.

The court found that Nhung and An were fully aware that leaving her son unattended at night could lead to his death. Their actions were deemed dangerous to society, directly infringing upon the boy's life, and warranting serious punishment.

Nhung, a married woman with two children, had been living with An and her youngest son in Duc Hoa Ha commune (formerly Duc Hoa, Long An) while working as factory workers. She usually left her 3-year-old son at a private preschool near her workplace during the day.

On 27/10/2024, no longer wanting to care for her son, Nhung abandoned him at a shopping center near their rented accommodation. He was later found by locals who reported the incident to the police. The police subsequently returned the child to Nhung.

Two days later, the preschool informed Nhung that they would no longer care for her son. That evening, during dinner, when her son became fussy, Nhung decided she couldn't care for him and discussed with An about finding a place for him. While An initially suggested leaving the boy with his aunt, Nhung decided to take him to an orphanage.

Around 10 PM, the couple packed some clothes, milk, and diapers, then drove her son to an orphanage in Hoa Khanh commune. Under the cover of darkness, Nhung left her son and the bag of supplies at the orphanage gate. They then returned to their accommodation, and went to work the next morning as usual.

Left alone, the boy cried and ran after his mother for about 150 meters before falling into a ditch. His body was discovered two days later by local residents.

Upon learning of their son's death, Nhung and An turned themselves in to the police and confessed to their actions.
