Stephen Doohan, a 33-year-old paramedic, was sentenced to 10 years and 6 months in prison by the High Court in Glasgow on 7/7, after pleading guilty to assault causing injury, sexual assault, and procuring an abortion.
During sentencing, the judge stated that the defendant had caused the victim long-term physical pain and psychological trauma.
According to court documents, Doohan met the victim on holiday in Ibiza in 2021 and began a long-distance relationship before confessing that he was married. The woman discovered she was pregnant on 14/3/2023 and visited Doohan in Edinburgh three days later. The couple agreed to keep the baby. However, during intercourse that night, Doohan secretly injected her with crushed abortion pills dissolved in liquid. The next morning, when the woman noticed a "white substance" discharging, Doohan claimed it was "vaginal fluid".
The following night, while the woman was asleep, Doohan pretended to have intercourse to conceal his actions of injecting her again. Waking up midway, she looked under the mattress and discovered a plastic syringe and white pills.
Doohan admitted his actions to his lover. The victim later discovered he had researched abortion online.
The couple went to the hospital on 18/3/2023, where Doohan asked her to lie about what had happened. The woman was informed of her miscarriage the next day.
The victim filed a complaint with Doohan's employer, the Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS), in May 2023. The SAS investigation found that on the day the woman announced her pregnancy, Doohan had searched for abortion pills. SAS immediately suspended Doohan and contacted Police Scotland, leading to his arrest.
