Probationary officer banned for life for acting as 'insider' for drug-dealing boyfriend

Probationary officer Maryam Ilyas, 20, has been banned from policing for life after disclosing confidential police information to her boyfriend, who was under investigation for drug trafficking.

A disciplinary panel was expected to dismiss Ilyas this week. However, Maryam Ilyas, a former West Yorkshire Police officer, resigned just before her disciplinary hearing on 27/11.

Ilyas was accused of accessing West Yorkshire Police computers three times between 3-5/2025 during her officer training to search for confidential information about her boyfriend, identified by police only as J.

She then informed her boyfriend that he was the target of a covert investigation.

Police did not discover her relationship with the drug dealer until 7/2025, when he was arrested and phone messages between the two were uncovered.

Investigators also found that the couple exchanged messages about money and drugs. The criminal sent images of a "mountain of cash" to the probationary officer, and they discussed drug dealing. She was found to have repeatedly shared confidential information and images of police operations, including the timing and locations of undercover patrols, and showed him his record on the force's system.

The disciplinary hearing revealed that she had failed to inform her superiors about her relationship with her criminal boyfriend after being recruited in 2024. Maryam told investigators that she "was unaware of his criminal record".

She initially denied any wrongdoing in the case, claiming that as an inexperienced new officer, she was burdened with the duty to "act like a seasoned police officer".

However, presented with message evidence and discussions about drug dealing from phone data, she confessed to the allegations. The chief constable described her actions as "repeated," "prolonged," and "deliberate," demonstrating a lack of respect for the public and her colleagues.
