Road rage brawl erupts after dispute over honking to overtake

Tran Trong Le, 48, riding a motorcycle through the Thu Thiem Tunnel, honked to overtake but the vehicle ahead did not yield, leading to a fight.

Ho Chi Minh City police temporarily detained Tran Trong Le and Pham Hoang Gia, 32, on 1/5 for disturbing public order.

According to the investigation, the incident occurred on the afternoon of 22/3. An acquaintance was driving Gia, who appeared intoxicated, on a motorcycle through the Thu Thiem Tunnel, heading from the city center towards the former Thu Duc City. Le, riding behind, repeatedly honked to overtake.

The busy road and repeated honking from behind prompted Gia to turn back and curse. Upon exiting the Saigon River Tunnel, Le accelerated, pulled alongside, cursed back, and then rode off.

The dispute reignited at the Mai Chi Tho - Nguyen Co Thach intersection, where both motorcycles stopped at a red light. Gia dismounted and rushed to fight Le. During the struggle, they collided, causing one civilian's motorcycle to fall. Despite this, the two continued their brawl, ignoring the traffic. The incident only stopped when passersby and Gia's relatives intervened.

The investigative agency determined that Le and Gia's actions occurred in a public place, causing public disorder, negatively impacting social safety, and demonstrating disregard for the law.
