The incident began on 14/8, when Zhang and Xia arrived in Vietnam via Tan Son Nhat International Airport for tourism purposes. They subsequently traveled to Da Nang to meet Wang, who arranged their hotel accommodations.
The following day, Wang accompanied Li Peng, 33, to exchange Chinese currency into Vietnamese dong. Li Peng then took the 400 million VND back to his apartment on Le Quang Dao Street, which he shared with his 25-year-old girlfriend from Da Nang.
On 16/8, Wang allegedly recruited Zhang and Xia to steal the money. That afternoon, with Wang’s assistance, the two younger men broke into Li Peng’s apartment and stole the 400 million VND along with jewelry, amounting to a total value of approximately 600 million VND. They also ransacked the apartment to create a false impression of a more extensive robbery.
Wang then booked flights for Zhang and Xia to return to China with the stolen goods. However, police apprehended them at Da Nang International Airport around 9 p.m. that evening with all the stolen items. Wang Meng managed to escape and is currently being sought by authorities.
