According to Martin Senders, a home appliance research specialist at Philips (Netherlands), the trend of lining the bottom of the fryer basket with aluminum foil or parchment paper to avoid cleaning is a serious mistake spreading on social media. "Incorrect paper placement reduces the quality of the food. Users should not blindly follow these tips," he emphasized.
An air fryer operates using high-speed circulating hot air, known as Rapid Air technology. The design of the air fryer basket includes a gap between the food rack and the bottom of the pot, allowing hot air to easily circulate upwards from below, reaching all surfaces of the food.
When the bottom of the air fryer is completely lined with paper, this crucial airflow is blocked. As a result, only the top surface of the food cooks properly, while the bottom becomes soggy, steamed, and fails to achieve the desired golden crispness.

Experts advise users who want to prevent sticking to place the liner directly on the surface of the fryer rack, right under the food. It is best to choose specialized perforated parchment paper to allow air to still pass through.
Beyond placement, securing the liner is crucial for preventing fires. Lightweight materials like parchment paper can easily be blown upwards by the strong airflow inside the air fryer, coming into contact with the glowing red heating element at the top. Therefore, users must place enough heavy food on top to firmly hold down the liner. Never operate the air fryer empty with only parchment paper inside.
To optimize efficiency and safety, experts suggest using specialized perforated silicone trays or liners. These accessories are heat-resistant, heavy enough not to be drawn up into the heating element by the air, help hot air circulate evenly, and make cleaning after cooking effortless.
Regular cleaning of the appliance, especially the upper heating element area, is also a key factor in maintaining heat distribution performance, ensuring dishes are always crispy and delicious.
