Hanoians flock to fly kites in vacant lot

A vacant lot spanning over 100 hectares in Van Khe ward, near the Kien Hung peach garden area, has become a daily afternoon gathering spot for hundreds of kite flyers over the past two weeks.

Each afternoon, hundreds of kites of all types gather in this area, ranging from traditional flute kites to animal-shaped kites and aerodynamic kites. Aerodynamic kites, which lack frames, utilize aerodynamic principles and wind power to maintain their shape and achieve high altitudes.

A group of students from classes 8A1 and 8A2 of Phu Cuong Secondary School brought kites printed with the national flag to the field after school. Minh Quan said, "We relieve academic pressure through this game."

The group of students attached flutes to their kites before flying them.

Nguyen Van Nam, 32, from Ha Dong ward, flew kites with his child. He stated that this playground not only provides families with a relaxing space at the end of the day but also offers meaningful childhood experiences for urban children.

Not only children, but many adults are also passionate about kites.

Nguyen Thi Thu Thao, 34, from Ha Tri village, Ha Dong ward, came to the kite-flying field with her husband and two children. She expressed, "Work is busy, so coming here every afternoon with my family to fly kites helps me relax. I hope Hanoi will have more kite-flying fields for residents to enjoy."

Cuong has been flying aerodynamic kites since 2021, employing various control techniques. Enthusiasts spend from 4-8 million VND to tens of millions of VND for a product ordered from abroad. A unique feature of these kites is that they allow flyers to attach 5-10 kites on a single string axis.

Adjacent to the area for small kites (with a wingspan under two meters) is a dedicated space for giant kites. Nguyen Duc Cuong, 39, leader of Hanoikiteteam, brought large aerodynamic kites, measuring 16-30 meters in length and with a 15-meter wingspan, to fly with his members. They arrived at noon to measure wind direction and speed, preparing for flight and selecting a wide, open location.

"We adhere to flight standards, prohibiting people and vehicles from standing beneath the flying area to prevent risks," Cuong said. His team always assigns members to be on standby around the launch site.

Beyond the kite-flying groups, many families bring their children to the field to enjoy the scenery and play after school.

The takeoff and landing processes require teamwork. Due to their weight and wind force, 3-5 people must hold the lines and steer the kites together. Cuong's group maintains a flight schedule of two sessions per week in Ha Dong and Long Bien. He organizes this activity to create a recreational space for children and residents after work.

However, Cuong's group faces obstacles in finding suitable flying fields, as inner-city areas are obstructed by power lines and have limited space. "We hope for a large-scale flying field that can accommodate our passion," he stated.

Ngoc Do, 42, from Ha Dong ward, said that for the past two weeks, he has prepared 10-20 nylon kites each afternoon, which are easy to fly, to give to children.

"This is also a way to encourage children to limit their phone usage for entertainment. Seeing the little ones playing happily with their kites, I feel like I'm reliving my childhood," he remarked.

By 17:30, the crowd flocking to the kite-flying field grew, compelling authorities to dispatch personnel to regulate traffic and prevent congestion.

"To ensure a space for our children to play, we residents remind each other to maintain general hygiene, park vehicles in designated areas, and avoid disturbing others," said Huu Hung from Thanh Xuan ward.
