The Institute of Earth Sciences reported the earthquake struck at 4:31 PM in Thac Ba commune, Lao Cai province. It registered a depth of approximately 16,8 km and was classified with a disaster risk level of 0.

Dang Ngoc Thang, residing in Bang Luan, Phu Tho (formerly Doan Hung district) approximately 10 km from the epicenter, recounted feeling the quake. He was sitting with friends in his yard when he heard a rumbling sound on the roof, followed by the ground shaking for about 4-5 seconds.

Residents in Thanh Ba and Ha Hoa communes of Phu Tho province, as well as Thac Ba commune in Lao Cai province, also reported experiencing tremors during the same period.
