50 households in Thu Duc City struggle with overnight flooding

After yesterday afternoon's downpour, floodwaters remained nearly 1 meter deep in a residential area beneath the Go Dua overpass on 6/8, impacting over 50 households and damaging property.

This morning, nearly 10 fire and rescue police officers were still on site, pumping water from the residential area located under the Go Dua overpass in Tam Binh ward. Many residents resorted to using buckets and basins to bail water out of their homes. Heavy rain from yesterday afternoon caused water to surge into the area, resulting in deep flooding exceeding 1 meter in some places.

The prolonged flooding damaged numerous household appliances, including washing machines, refrigerators, televisions, wardrobes, and motorbikes. Many families were forced to bring electrical items, fans, electric stoves, and bedding outside to dry.

Mr. Minh Khai, 55, sat dejectedly beside a pile of damaged belongings. “We were about to have dinner when the water rushed in like a waterfall,” he said. “The whole family had to stay up all night cleaning up. Now we have to spend tens of millions of dong to repair the appliances.”

A few houses away, the home of Mr. Tran Luong Anh, 45, also suffered significant damage. Floodwaters nearly 1 meter deep toppled his refrigerator and washing machine. Papers, wooden furniture, and clothing were soaked. Mr. Anh explained that authorities brought pumps last night, but the high water level and continuous operation caused the pumps to overheat, requiring intermittent breaks.

Nguyen Minh Dien, Chairman of the People's Committee of Tam Binh Ward, explained that the affected area lies in a depression about 1 meter below street level. Many of the single-story houses lack a proper drainage system due to their location within the planned Go Dua roundabout project.

During heavy rain, water from the street flows down into this residential area, flooding approximately 50 houses and affecting about 100 people. Overnight, authorities mobilized forces to help residents move their belongings to the former Binh Chieu Ward cultural center. As of this morning, some houses were still deeply flooded.

“The ward continues to coordinate with fire and rescue police to pump water and assist residents in dealing with the aftermath,” Mr. Dien said, adding that local authorities will survey the area to establish a temporary drainage system to mitigate future flooding.

Yesterday afternoon, after over an hour of heavy rain, many streets around Thu Duc Market, Binh Thanh District, and Go Vap District experienced severe flooding. Water levels rose to cover people and motorbikes in alleys on Chu Van An Street (Binh Thanh) and Duong Van Cam Street (Thu Duc), making travel difficult and disrupting daily life.

Le Dinh Quyet, Head of Forecasting at the Southern and Central Highlands Hydrometeorological Station, stated that Ho Chi Minh City and the Southern region recently experienced a heatwave during the rainy season due to the influence of the subtropical high and a western hot low-pressure system. From 6/8 to 10/8, widespread rain is expected to return to the region, and residents should be prepared for thunderstorms and squalls.
