Early yesterday morning, Lieutenant Colonel Binh and hai officers were patrolling the Soai Rap river by canoe. Their vessel collided with the Hai Nam 61 oil tanker near the Long An international port. The Hai Nam 61, a Vietnamese-flagged ship, measures nearly 80 m long, about 13,6 m wide, and has a nearly 3.000-ton deadweight. It was traveling from PVOil Nha Be petroleum port to the Soai Rap pilot station when the incident occurred.
The collision caused the canoe to capsize, sending ba officers into the river. Two of them managed to escape, but Lieutenant Colonel Binh went missing.
Authorities mobilized 24 specialized vehicles and 42 fishing boats for the search operation, dividing the area into six zones. They instructed all vessels passing through the area to reduce speed, comply with official guidance, and assist in the search efforts.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
The Soai Rap river, stretching over 40 km, serves as a vital waterway. It connects Ho Chi Minh City's seaports to the open sea, facilitating access for large cargo vessels.
