According to the Ca Mau Provincial People's Committee, the closure will facilitate construction of package number 12 of the airport upgrade project, overseen by Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV). This package includes the construction and installation of equipment for the runway, taxiway, apron, and auxiliary facilities. Construction is scheduled to begin on 19/8 and be completed by the end of 10/2026.

The project has a total investment of approximately 2,400 billion VND and was approved by the prime minister in 10/2024. The plan calls for Ca Mau airport to meet 4C standards by 2030, enabling it to handle medium-range aircraft like the Airbus A320 and A321, with a capacity of one million passengers annually. By 2050, the airport is projected to accommodate 3 million passengers per year.
The site clearance phase, impacting over 600 households and organizations in Tan Thanh ward, Ca Mau city, covering an area of nearly 106 hectares, has been completed. The total compensation cost exceeded 577 billion VND.
Ca Mau airport, originally built during the French colonial period, currently has a 1,500-meter-long and 30-meter-wide runway, accommodating smaller aircraft like the ATR72 (up to 90 passengers) and the Embraer E190 (124 passengers). The current terminal has a capacity of 200,000 passengers annually.
The airport currently operates one daily flight from Ca Mau to Ho Chi Minh City using ATR72 aircraft. Bamboo Airways operated an Embraer flight from Hanoi to Ca Mau starting mid-2023, but it was suspended shortly after launch.
