Can Tho leadership announced after merger with Hau Giang and Soc Trang

Following the merger with Hau Giang and Soc Trang, Do Thanh Binh has been appointed as the new Can Tho City Party Secretary, and Tran Van Lau as the city's chairman.

The Politburo and the Party Secretariat have appointed the new Can Tho City Party Committee, Standing Committee, Secretary, and Deputy Secretary. The City Party Committee comprises 79 members: 27 from the former Can Tho City Party Committee, 20 from Soc Trang province, and 32 from Hau Giang province.

The Standing Committee consists of 20 members: five from the former Can Tho City, four from Soc Trang province, and 11 from Hau Giang province.

58-year-old Do Thanh Binh, former Party Secretary of Can Tho City, has been appointed as the Party Secretary of the newly merged Can Tho City. Binh, originally from Ca Mau province, holds a master's degree in economics. He has held various positions in Kien Giang province, including Head of the Provincial Party Committee's Organization Board, vice chairman, and chairman. In 10/2020, he became the Party Secretary of Kien Giang province and served as the Party Secretary of Can Tho City from 17/1/2020 to 2025.

Dong Van Thanh, 56, is the new standing deputy secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee. A native of Can Tho City, he holds a bachelor's degree in sociology. He has served as Head of the Provincial Party Committee Office, vice chairman of the provincial People's Committee, and deputy secretary of the Hau Giang Provincial Party Committee.

In 11/2020, he was elected as chairman of the Hau Giang People's Committee. On 1/12/2024, the Hau Giang Provincial Party Committee elected him as the Provincial Party Secretary for the 2020-2025 term.

The five deputy secretaries of the Can Tho City Party Committee are Tran Van Lau, Nguyen Tuan Anh, Truong Canh Tuyen, Tran Van Huyen, and Ho Thi Cam Dao.

The new Can Tho City People's Committee has six members. The chairman is Tran Van Lau, 55, former deputy secretary and chairman of the Soc Trang Provincial People's Committee. Lau holds a master's degree in Party and State Building and a bachelor's degree in political science, specializing in social management. He rose through the ranks of the military, attaining the rank of colonel and serving as Commander of the Soc Trang Provincial Military Command. From 11/2020 to 30/6/2025, he served as the deputy secretary and chairman of the Soc Trang Provincial People's Committee.

The five vice chairmen of the Can Tho City People's Committee are Vuong Quoc Nam, Nguyen Van Khoi, Nguyen Van Hoa, Tran Chi Hung, and Ba Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep.

The Can Tho City People's Council has five members. The chairman is Dong Van Thanh, Party Secretary of Hau Giang province. The vice chairmen are Ma Thi Tuoi, a member of the City Party Committee's Standing Board, and three City Party Committee members: Vo Thi My Trang, Ly Rotha, and Tran Quoc Vu.

Ho Thi Cam Dao, standing deputy secretary of the Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee and chairwoman of the provincial People's Council, has been appointed as chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the newly merged Can Tho City. Dao, 53, is from Soc Trang province and holds a master's degree in public administration from the University of Public Administration and a senior degree in political theory. She was elected chairwoman of the Soc Trang Provincial People's Council in 6/2021.

Can Tho City also announced the 103 newly appointed Party Secretaries and chairmen of the newly established communes and wards. Many members of the standing committees and executive committees of the former Can Tho City and Hau Giang and Soc Trang provinces have been appointed to leadership positions at the commune level.

Specifically, Tran Thi Vinh Nghi (former Secretary of Thoi Lai district, Can Tho City) will be the Secretary of Ninh Kieu ward. Huynh Trung Tru (former Chairman of Ninh Kieu district People's Committee, Can Tho City) will be the Secretary of Cai Khe ward. Mai Nhu Toan, former Director of the Can Tho City Department of Construction, will be the Secretary of Tan An ward. Chau Viet Tha (former Director of the Can Tho City Department of Home Affairs) will be the Secretary of O Mon ward. Duong Sa Kha (former Secretary of Vinh Chau town, Soc Trang province) will be the secretary of Soc Trang ward.

After the merger, Can Tho City now covers an area of over 6,360 km2, with a population of over 4.19 million people, and 103 communes and wards. It is one of six centrally-administered cities in Vietnam.
