On 3/7, Can Tho's Department of Construction reported to the city's People's Committee a plan to renovate the Tay Nam Bo Guesthouse (Hung Phu ward), Guesthouse No. 2 (Ninh Kieu ward), and the public housing block behind the City Party Committee headquarters for use as public housing.
These three buildings have a total usable area of over 10,200 m2 and are currently dilapidated after a long period of disuse. The total renovation cost for the three facilities is estimated at over 18 billion VND.

After renovation, the three buildings will provide 118 rooms: 62 rooms at the Tay Nam Bo Guesthouse, 36 at Guesthouse No. 2, and 20 at the City Party Committee's housing block – enough to accommodate 118 officials. The Department of Construction is also reviewing an additional 20 state-owned houses for conversion into public housing.
The Department of Construction has also calculated that if four people are housed per room, the three buildings could accommodate approximately 500 officials and public employees. In the long term, the city plans to build 310 public housing units with a total investment of 365 billion VND, to be completed in 2026, providing enough housing for 1,240 people.
Can Tho currently has 500 social housing units available for rent or purchase to address the housing needs of officials and public employees. Until sufficient housing can be arranged, the city is providing a monthly allowance of 4 million VND per relocated official to cover travel and accommodation expenses.
Following the merger with Soc Trang and Hau Giang, the new centrally-administered Can Tho city comprises 103 communes and wards, covering a natural area of over 6,360 km2, making it the third largest city in the Mekong Delta and the 19th largest nationwide. The city has a population of nearly 4.2 million people and an economy worth nearly 282,000 billion VND.
