On the morning of 14/4, in Vinh Loc ward, Nghe An province, three women exercising were attacked by a dog. Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhuy and Ms. Ly sustained multiple injuries, necessitating hospitalization for stitches. Their health is now stable, but they remain traumatized by the event.
According to Mr. Le Dang Phuc, head of the My Ha neighborhood security team, the first attack occurred around 5 h on Tran Trung Quang street. A dog, estimated to weigh about 10 kg, lunged at Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhuy, biting her and knocking her down, causing her head to hit the road. Moments later, the dog attacked Ms. Ly and Ms. Mai, who were also walking. Ms. Ly was bitten on the leg, while Ms. Mai suffered injuries to her buttocks and chest. The dog eventually fled after a man on a bicycle used a stick to chase it away.
On the evening of 15/4, Mr. Phuc reported that authorities have reviewed camera footage to identify the dog, but without success. The dog's owner and its rabies status remain unknown. This incident has caused significant concern among local residents, leading many to temporarily stop morning exercise or carry sticks for self-defense.
Vinh Loc ward leaders stated they will investigate and coordinate with relevant forces to address the situation and ensure public safety for residents.
This attack follows other recent dog-related incidents. On 3/4, Mr. Dang Huu Quyet, 83, from Ha Tinh, died after being attacked by a dog he was feeding.
According to the Ministry of Health, Vietnam records about 70-90 rabies deaths annually, primarily in rural and mountainous areas. While the disease has a nearly 100% fatality rate once symptoms appear, it is preventable with timely vaccination.
