Dong Viet bridge: First cable-stayed bridge across Thuong river

The Dong Viet bridge, the first cable-stayed bridge spanning the Thuong river and connecting Bac Ninh province with Hai Phong city, opened to traffic in early July.

Located approximately 2.4 km downstream from the Dong Viet ferry terminal, the Dong Viet bridge connects Canh Thuy ward in Bac Ninh province with Tran Hung Dao ward in Hai Phong city. Construction began in 6/2022 with a total investment of nearly 1,500 billion VND (Vietnamese Dong). The entire route opened to traffic in early 7/2025.

The Dong Viet bridge stretches over 730 m and is constructed of reinforced and prestressed concrete. The 22.5 m wide deck accommodates four lanes of traffic. The bridge's piers and abutments, also made of reinforced concrete, rest on bored pile foundations.

The bridge's focal point is its two striking orange cable stays, anchored to two intersecting towers resembling outstretched arms, symbolizing cooperation and friendship.

Steel railings, standing over one meter tall, line the bridge.

High-powered LED lights illuminate the base of the cable-stay towers at night.

The nearly 7 km long approach roads to the bridge are built to the standards of a class II lowland road, with a 22 m wide roadbed and a 21.5 m wide carriageway.

The approach road on the Tran Hung Dao ward side in Hai Phong city features six lanes connecting to National Highway 37, complete with high-mast lighting and greenery.

Signage has been installed on the bridge and its approach roads.

Drainage ditches run along the center of the road in both directions.

Currently, traffic across the bridge is light, mainly consisting of container trucks transporting goods to and from the Duc Giang and Dong Phuc urban industrial and service zones.

The project is expected to boost goods transportation, promote tourism, and attract investment to industrial zones and clusters in Bac Ninh province, Hai Phong city, and neighboring provinces.

The approach road on the Canh Thuy ward side in Bac Ninh province traverses vast fields, with a hard median strip. Guardrails are currently being installed along some sections.
