Elderly woman killed by train while crossing railway tracks

Nguyen Thi Thanh, 86, died after being struck by an SE8 train while crossing a railway barrier to collect snails in Lam Thanh commune on the morning of 9/8.

At approximately 10:29 h, at kilometer 328+350, a level crossing in Hamlet 2, Lam Thanh commune (formerly part of Hung Nguyen district), Ms. Thanh proceeded to cross the tracks despite the barrier being lowered and automatic warning lights activated.

The SE8 train driver applied the emergency brakes upon seeing someone on the tracks. However, due to the short distance, the train could not stop in time and struck the victim. Ms. Thanh was thrown about 2 meters from the railway tracks, approximately 15 meters from the crossing, sustaining multiple injuries and dying at the scene.

The train had to stop to handle the accident, delaying its journey by about 25 minutes.

In the first eight months of 2026, Nghe An recorded one railway traffic accident resulting in one fatality. The province has 171 road-rail intersections, including 73 level crossings (23 with guards, 37 with automatic warnings and barriers, 13 with only signs) and 98 self-made crossings.
