On the morning of 28/5, at a press conference announcing the 9th National Congress of the Vietnam Farmers' Union for the 2026-2031 term, Bui Thi Thom, Vice Chairwoman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union, highlighted the organization's focus on livelihood support for farmers in areas experiencing rapid urbanization and industrial growth. This initiative addresses the challenges faced by farmers whose land is reclaimed for development projects.
The Union plans to enhance its support through several key measures. It will strengthen communication, provide vocational training consultation, offer skill development workshops, and facilitate capital access to enable farmers to transition into new occupations. Additionally, the Union will offer scientific and technical advice, ensure access to funding, and create opportunities for farmers to participate in cooperative models and professional associations that align with the evolving economic landscape.

According to Thom, union organizations in rapidly industrializing localities like Bac Ninh and Hung Yen have already begun to adapt their operational methods. Historically, professional branches and groups were primarily centered on cultivation and animal husbandry. However, they are now shifting towards agricultural service models, business ventures, or assisting residents in service activities that cater to industrial zones and urban areas.
"The Union must accompany farmers to ensure they continue to have jobs and income after losing their agricultural land," Thom stated, emphasizing the organization's commitment to its members.
Regarding the strategic direction for the new period, the Vice Chairwoman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union explained that all levels of the union are transitioning from input-based support to a more comprehensive approach focused on value chains and market demand. Farmers will receive assistance in brand building, origin traceability, and establishing product consumption connections, moving beyond the traditional provision of seeds, capital, or supplies.
This shift encourages farmers to adopt an "agricultural economy" mindset, moving away from merely "agricultural production." The goal is to foster large-scale commodity production, integrate technology, and establish chain linkages to significantly increase income and enhance competitiveness within the market.
The 9th National Congress of the Vietnam Farmers' Union will convene on 7-8/6 at the National Convention Center in Hanoi. The congress, themed "Solidarity - Democracy - Breakthrough - Cooperation - Development," will host 600 delegates representing over 10 million farmer members nationwide.
