Heavy rain lashed northern Vietnam yesterday due to the influence of a tropical convergence zone connected to Typhoon Co May. Rainfall in Chieng En (Son La) reached 162 mm in the past 24 hours.
The downpour caused flash floods in small rivers and streams along the Ma River in Son La province. In Chieng So commune, floodwaters rushing down from the mountains overnight swept away four houses and four people. Two bodies have been recovered so far. The flood also damaged crops and power lines.

Flooding also occurred in several other communes in Son La, including Yen Hung, Chieng Khoong, Song Ma, and Nam Ty. Authorities evacuated dozens of households to safety overnight.
The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting predicts light rain in Son La today. However, the accumulated rainfall from recent days increases the risk of landslides in numerous communes.
