The Ministry of Construction has approved adjustments to the Gia Binh International Airport Master Plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050.
Located in the communes of Gia Binh, Luong Tai, Nhan Thang, and Lam Thao (Bac Ninh), the airport will be a 4E-grade facility for both civil aviation and national security and defense. By 2030, Gia Binh International Airport is planned to have a capacity of approximately 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tons of cargo annually, accommodating large aircraft like the B777, B787, A350, A321, as well as specialized aircraft.
By 2050, the airport is projected to handle around 50 million passengers and 2.5 million tons of cargo per year.
The new plan increases Gia Binh airport's capacity six times compared to the previous one. The current plan allows for a capacity of 5 million passengers and 250,000 tons of cargo per year by 2030, and about 15 million passengers and 1 million tons of cargo per year by 2050.

Regarding runways and aprons, by 2030, Gia Binh airport is planned to have two runways in the northern area, each measuring 3,500 m x 45 m, with a separation of approximately 366 m. The passenger and cargo terminal areas will have 81 aircraft parking spaces.
By 2050, two additional runways are planned for the southern area, also measuring 3,500 m x 45 m with a separation of approximately 366 m. During this phase, the aircraft parking area around the passenger and cargo terminals will be expanded to accommodate approximately 123 aircraft. The current plan only provides for one runway measuring 3,500 m x 45 m until 2050.
Gia Binh Airport is expected to require approximately 1,959 ha of land for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, almost five times more than the previous plan. This includes around 957 ha for civil aviation facilities, about 927 ha for airfield facilities, and 75 ha for security managed by the Ministry of Public Security.
The airport will also have a VIP terminal for special aircraft located southwest of the passenger terminal, occupying approximately 5.4 ha.
The Ministry of Construction has assigned the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV) to review and incorporate the Appraisal Report from the Finance and Planning Department to finalize the planning documents and collaborate with the Bac Ninh People's Committee (UBND) to announce and implement the plan.
The Bac Ninh People's Committee is responsible for reviewing and updating the aforementioned planning content into local and related plans. The province is also tasked with investing in a road connecting the airport to Hanoi and an access road to ensure operational capacity and connectivity.
Construction of Gia Binh Airport, covering approximately 125 ha, commenced in early 12/2024 under the Ministry of Public Security and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. Initially, it will be a level 3 helicopter airport, a level 3 military airport, and a level 3C civilian airport according to ICAO standards.
The airport's model will serve the missions of the Public Security Air Force Regiment, ensuring security while promoting socio-economic development, similar to the Phan Thiet Airport model.
