Gia Lai bans 650 fishing vessels from going to sea

The chairman of the Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee has ordered authorities to inspect 650 fishing vessels that do not meet operational requirements and prevent them from going to sea until violations are rectified.

On 12/7, the chairman of the Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee directed relevant agencies to review and strengthen measures against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, aiming to address high-risk groups definitively.

The focus is on monitoring fishing vessels at risk of violating foreign waters and those operating clandestinely without proper licenses. A list of vessels with expired registrations, fishing permits, or lacking vessel monitoring systems (VMS) will be publicly posted in coastal communes and wards for daily monitoring.

Authorities will strictly manage 650 ineligible vessels, prohibiting them from leaving port. The province has ordered owners of 30 vessels without VMS signals to install the devices or bring their vessels ashore. Among these, 16 vessels in Phu My Dong commune (formerly Phu My District, Binh Dinh) require urgent action.

The Gia Lai Province Border Guard Command has been tasked with inspecting 100% of fishing vessels entering and exiting ports, preventing any violating vessel from going to sea, and monitoring VMS devices for boundary violations and illegal fishing activities.

The provincial police will coordinate with local police to closely monitor individuals potentially involved in IUU fishing, particularly those brokering illegal activities or guiding fishing vessels and fishermen into foreign waters.

Coastal commune and ward authorities will continue informing and guiding fishermen on vessel registration and fishing permit applications. Phu My Dong commune must strictly control 16 vessels over 15 meters long without VMS and require installation before permitting operation.

The Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee has also urged Cat Tien, De Gi, An Luong, and Phu My Dong communes (formerly coastal areas of Binh Dinh Province) to intensify communication and encourage squid fishermen operating in southern provinces to avoid violating foreign waters.
