The People's Committee of Lam Dong province recently established a scientific appraisal council to review documents before submitting them to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for consideration of revoking the decision to rank GouGah Waterfall as a national scenic relic. This proposal was made based on an assessment of the scenic spot's current condition and a submission from the People's Committee of Duc Trong commune.

GouGah waterfall, located about 900 m from National Highway 20 in Duc Trong commune, was once a pristine and majestic natural waterfall. Originating from the upper reaches of the Da Nhim river, the waterfall spans about 60 m wide, cascading over rocky rapids ranging from 0,5 to 3 m high depending on the season. It was characteristic of the Southern Central Highlands region, highly valued for its landscape due to a stable flow year-round and a diverse ecosystem.
In 2000, the Ministry of Culture and Information (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) classified GouGah as a national scenic relic, designating a protected area covering over 129 ha.
However, local surveys indicate the waterfall's landscape has significantly deteriorated since the Dai Ninh hydropower plant began impounding water in 2008. Much of the scenic area has been submerged, and the natural structure of the waterfall has been disrupted.
During the rainy season, rising lake levels submerge about two-thirds of the waterfall; at times, the flow is almost unrecognizable. Conversely, the dry season brings water scarcity, causing the waterfall to dwindle, with weeds and water hyacinths covering its bed.
Beyond the hydropower plant's impact, climate change, along with natural erosion and sedimentation, has also contributed to altering the area's topography. Despite attracting numerous investors interested in developing ecotourism, projects in the area have not achieved expected results.
According to the People's Committee of Duc Trong commune, preserving and restoring the original elements that constitute the scenic spot's value is currently very difficult, almost unfeasible. Therefore, local authorities have requested competent agencies to consider revoking its relic status in accordance with the 2024 Cultural Heritage Law.
