Ho Chi Minh city breaks ground on central road expansion, increasing width fivefold

Ho Chi Minh City has commenced a nearly VND 1 trillion project to expand 360 m of Tran Binh Trong street from 5 m to 23 m, aiming to alleviate congestion and integrate with Ly Thai To park. The groundbreaking took place on 4/5.

The upgraded section extends from Ly Thai To intersection to Hung Vuong, within Vuon Lai Ward, formerly part of District 10. The route will feature a 15 m wide carriageway and 4 m sidewalks on each side, a significant increase compared to previous plans.

The project includes paving sidewalks with granite, upgrading the drainage system, undergrounding technical infrastructure such as electricity and telecommunications, and renovating urban spaces. These enhancements will create a synchronized connection with Ly Thai To Park. The road expansion is expected to be completed by 2/9 this year.

A substantial portion of the funding is allocated for compensation and site clearance. This affects 116 households and organizations, with 97 cases requiring complete relocation.

Huynh Van Tam, Chairman of Vuon Lai Ward People's Committee, highlighted the community's long-standing anticipation for this project. He noted that it will not only improve traffic flow but also upgrade the degraded arched sewer system, enhancing safety in the area. The project holds special significance as it aligns with the renovation of Ly Thai To Park, which hosts the memorial for Covid-19 victims.

The street expansion is an integral part of the broader urban planning initiative for the 4,3-hectare land plot at 1 Ly Thai To, opposite Cong Hoa roundabout. This area is currently being developed into a pivotal green, cultural, and public transport hub for central Ho Chi Minh City.
