Ho Chi Minh City redirects traffic to ease congestion at eastern gateway

To alleviate congestion at the Tan Van intersection – currently under construction for Ring Road 3 – the Department of Construction has requested narrowing construction barriers and rerouting traffic.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction recently reported this solution to the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City to mitigate traffic jams after the closure of Provincial Road 743 on 16/7 for the construction of the Tan Van intersection, part of Ring Road 3. This intersection, one of the largest at the city's eastern gateway, connects National Highway 1 (near Dong Nai Bridge) with Provincial Road 743 and My Phuoc - Tan Van Boulevard. It experiences heavy daily traffic, especially trucks and containers traveling between Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, and Dong Nai.

After discussions with relevant parties, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction stated the agreed-upon plan involves barricading only half of the road beside the steel overpass at the Tan Van intersection for construction. The remaining area will be open for trucks and containers traveling from Dong Nai Bridge towards Provincial Road 743 to minimize immediate congestion.

The Department also urged expedited completion of the East-West Boulevard, currently being developed by the Di An Regional Investment and Construction Project Management Board. This route, connecting to National Highway 1 near the Tan Van area, is expected to be finished before 25/7. Once open, the East-West Boulevard will serve as an alternate route during the Tan Van intersection construction.

In addition to the new route, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction requested the project owner to complete the Ring Road 3 frontage road in the area before 15/8, facilitating traffic flow and aiding construction. Furthermore, relevant units need to install adequate signage and increase traffic control personnel to minimize congestion.

The congestion at the Tan Van intersection has worsened recently, coinciding with the partial closure of the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway for expansion joint repairs on Long Thanh Bridge. As this expressway is a major route connecting Ho Chi Minh City to Dong Nai and Ba Ria - Vung Tau, traffic has been diverted to National Highway 1 through Tan Van, causing hours-long traffic jams on surrounding roads.
