The Ho Chi Minh City People's Council approved the investment policy for the Thu Duc canal improvement project at its 4th session on the morning of 27/8.
With a total capital of 5,124 billion VND, the project will rehabilitate approximately 3 km of the Thu Duc canal during the 2026-2031 period. The canal will be dredged and widened to enhance its drainage capacity for the entire basin.
A significant aspect is the upgrade of the pumping station at the canal's mouth, near the Saigon River. Its capacity will increase from 7,200 to approximately 120,000 cubic meters per hour, more than 16 times its current output. Once operational, the Thu Duc canal will function as a regulating reservoir, maintaining low water levels to collect water from local drainage systems and pump it into the river.

The project also includes urban regeneration, improving the environment and landscape along the canal route. Roads, at least 13 meters wide, with sidewalks and a minimum of two lanes, will be built on both sides. Integrated lighting, storm drainage, domestic wastewater systems, and utility trenches will be installed.
Green spaces will be established between the roads and the embankment, with some areas potentially combining green space with parking lots.
To implement the project, TP HCM anticipates acquiring nearly 15,7 hectares of land, affecting approximately 435 cases. Of these, 238 cases will involve full relocation and 197 cases partial relocation. Compensation, support, and resettlement costs are estimated at 2,771 billion VND, accounting for over half of the project's total capital.
According to city authorities, the project aims to alleviate flooding in central Thu Duc, particularly around Thu Duc market and its vicinity. This is crucial as heavy rains combined with high tides increasingly strain the drainage system.

Thu Duc market is situated at the intersection of several roads, including Vo Van Ngan, Duong Van Cam, To Ngoc Van, and Kha Van Can. Due to its low elevation, the market area frequently experiences deep flooding during heavy rainfall.
Water converging from various areas often dislodges manhole covers around the market, damages road surfaces, disrupts traffic, and impacts local trade and residents' daily lives.
