FIFA President Gianni Infantino was in Hanoi to attend the second leg of the ASEAN Cup 2026 final between the Vietnam and Thailand national teams. His presence underscored FIFA's interest in Southeast Asian football.
During the reception, General Secretary, President To Lam welcomed the FIFA President back to Vietnam. He praised FIFA's leadership role in world football and its consistent support for Vietnamese football over many years, highlighting the professional and diplomatic significance of Infantino's visit.
To Lam emphasized that football is widely loved by the Vietnamese people, possessing a strong ability to connect, inspire, and strengthen community solidarity. He outlined Vietnam's strategic priorities for football development, including improving school football infrastructure to ensure schools have standard stadiums for students' physical training. Vietnam is also establishing youth talent training centers and developing large-scale, modern, international-standard stadium systems.
The General Secretary, President proposed that FIFA assist Vietnam in exploring opportunities to host several tournaments within the organization's system. He suggested that Vietnam initially prioritize events suitable for its current facilities and organizational capacity, with a long-term goal of hosting larger-scale events as infrastructure improves.
Furthermore, To Lam requested FIFA's continued support in several key areas: training coaches and referees, enhancing professional capacity and governance, and developing women's football, school football, grassroots football, professional football, and national teams.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his appreciation for the Vietnamese people's passion for football and sportsmanship. He identified Vietnam as a country with great potential for football development in the region.
Infantino affirmed FIFA's readiness to share expertise and provide support to Vietnam. This includes assistance with infrastructure development, technical expertise, community and youth football training, and strengthening management capacity in the coming period.
