Hue regulates funerals not exceeding 72 hours

Residents in Hue city must organize funerals for a maximum of 72 hours, without scattering Vietnamese currency, foreign currency, votive papers, hell money, or other items on the procession route.

On 13/7, the Hue City People's Committee announced it had issued regulations for implementing a civilized lifestyle in organizing funerals throughout the area. Accordingly, funeral arrangements must be solemn, economical, and civilized, aligning with national cultural traditions, fine customs, and legal provisions. They must also respect local beliefs, religions, and good customs, while ensuring environmental hygiene, public order, and traffic safety.

Funerals in localities often last for extended periods. Vo Thanh

Funerals must be simple and concise, prohibiting the scattering of Vietnamese currency, foreign currency, votive papers, hell money, or other items on the street. They must not use sound that disturbs the community or involve superstitious activities. The maximum duration for organizing a funeral is 72 hours from the time of death until the procession, except in special cases decided by the chairperson of the communal People's Committee.

In addition, Hue city encourages the use of reusable wreaths during visitations, limits the consumption of alcohol, beer, and tobacco, and advises against extravagant feasts. The city also promotes cremation or other civilized burial methods that align with cemetery planning and practical conditions. Communes and wards are responsible for guiding, inspecting, supervising, and handling or recommending actions against violations according to regulations.

Residents still maintain burial customs. Vo Thanh

For many years, residents in Hue city have maintained the custom of organizing prolonged funerals and building elaborate tombs. Some families in coastal areas, particularly those with relatives abroad, organize funerals lasting more than one week to await the return of their loved ones.

To reduce the practice of ground burial and the construction of elaborate tombs, the Hue City People's Council approved a resolution on a policy to support cremation costs until 2030. Residents opting for cremation will receive 100% of the costs based on the service price of local cremation facilities.
