On 19/9, at approximately 4:30 PM, a landslide occurred near Huoi Pai village in Yen Na commune (formerly part of Tuong Duong district). A mountainside, dozens of meters high, collapsed, bringing down trees and vegetation, completely covering provincial road 543C, which is over 6 meters wide.
According to a Yen Na commune leader, the area had experienced several minor landslides in the days prior. However, the landslide on the afternoon of 19/9 was the largest, estimated to involve hundreds of cubic meters of earth and rock, completely disrupting traffic on provincial road 543C.
The landslide has isolated 309 households, comprising approximately 1,200 residents, in Huoi Pai and Cha Lum villages. Yen Na commune authorities have secured both ends of the affected area and are formulating plans to ensure access and provide essential supplies to the residents. Cleanup machinery will only be deployed when the area is confirmed safe.
"If weather conditions are favorable and it's safe to deploy machinery to the site, clearing the debris could take four to five days," a Yen Na commune leader stated. "However, the region is currently experiencing rain, and the mountainside still presents a risk of further rockslides."
Commune authorities have surveyed vulnerable areas, relocated high-risk families to safety, and advised residents against attempting to cross the landslide site or approaching the base of the mountain, citing the potential for further collapses.
Provincial road 543C, spanning over 51 kilometers, connects provincial road 543B with National Highway 16 in Yen Na commune and other communes formerly within Tuong Duong district. This route is a vital artery for local residents' travel and commerce.
The North Central region, particularly Nghe An, has been experiencing heavy rainfall due to a tropical convergence zone and wind convergence. Meteorological agencies recorded 399 mm of rain in Vinh from 7 AM to 3 PM today, marking the highest September rainfall since 1985, nearly one-sixth of the average annual total. This deluge has led to severe flooding across numerous streets in Vinh, with water inundating apartment complexes.
