Ministry proposes one-day Vietnamese Culture Day holiday, no work swap

Following additional feedback, the Ministry of Home Affairs has proposed to the government a one-day Vietnamese Culture Day holiday on 24/11, without swapping working days.

In its supplementary proposal, the Ministry of Home Affairs stated that this year's Vietnamese Culture Day falls on a Tuesday, allowing employees one day of paid leave. Initially, the drafting agency considered swapping the working day of Monday, 23/11, to Saturday, 28/11, to create a continuous four-day break from 21/11 to 24/11.

However, after considering feedback and reviewing practical requirements, the Ministry of Home Affairs now proposes that civil servants and public employees take one day off on Tuesday, 24/11, with no work day swap. This schedule also applies to employees in the private sector.

The rationale for this adjustment is that late November is a critical period when agencies and units focus on completing their annual programs and work plans. Similarly, businesses are accelerating production, fulfilling orders, finalizing business plans, and preparing for the next year. A single-day holiday without a work swap ensures the continuity of year-end work processes and supports stable production and business operations, particularly for companies with shift-based, seasonal, or continuous production schedules. This approach still allows citizens to participate in cultural activities, fosters business development, and maintains administrative functions.

The proposal for the Lunar New Year holiday remains consistent with previous submissions, extending for 7 days, from the 28th day of the 12th lunar month (Binh Ngo year) until the end of the 5th day of the 1st lunar month (Dinh Mui year), specifically from 4/2/2027 to 10/2/2027. Civil servants and public employees are scheduled to return to work on the 6th day of the Lunar New Year.

For National Day in 2027, civil servants and public employees will have one additional day off immediately following the holiday, on 3/9/2027. Combined with the two weekend days, this will create a continuous four-day break from 2/9/2027 to 5/9/2027.

Vietnam currently observes 12 paid public holidays, which include: New Year's Day (one day), Lunar New Year (five days), Hung Kings' Commemoration Day (one day), Reunification Day (one day), International Workers' Day (one day), National Day (two days), and Vietnamese Culture Day (one day).
