Motorbikes submerged in Ho Chi Minh City after heavy rain

Heavy rain lasting 30 minutes caused severe flooding on several roads in Ho Chi Minh City, submerging motorbikes and disrupting traffic on the evening of 5/8.

Around 6:30 PM, heavy rain and thunderstorms caused flooding up to one meter deep in several alleys on Chu Van An street, Binh Thanh ward. Due to the lack of a drainage system and the low-lying terrain, this area frequently experiences severe flooding during heavy downpours.

In a section of Chu Van An alley flooded to a depth exceeding one meter, residents clung to fences to avoid the water as they made their way to Phan Chu Trinh street to retrieve their motorbikes parked on the sidewalk.

Floodwaters reached the seats of motorbikes parked in front of houses on Chu Van An street.

As water flowed into low-lying areas, carrying debris that clogged drains, Mr. Hoa waded through the floodwaters to clear a drain. He explained that the downpour was so intense that his neighborhood was severely flooded within 10 minutes. "We were about to have dinner when the water rushed in. Now we have to deal with the flooding inside the house while also clearing debris from the drains outside," Mr. Hoa said.

The drain started to function after residents removed the accumulated trash and plastic bags.

With the streets deeply flooded, residents of Binh Thanh ward held onto fences along the roadside to stay safe and avoid the water.

To Van Nam helped a fellow resident push their motorbike through a flooded section of Dang Thuy Tram street.

Water covered Nguyen Thuy Tram street all the way to Pham Van Dong street.
