Phan Thiet waste plant shut down for environmental violations

The Phan Thiet waste processing plant in Tien Thanh ward has been ordered to suspend operations for six months, starting 1/7, due to environmental violations.

According to a recent decision by the Lam Dong Department of Finance (formerly Binh Thuan), the six-month suspension will allow Nhat Hoang Co., Ltd. (the plant's management company) to address the violations.

The Department of Agriculture and Environment, along with Tien Thanh ward and related units, have been tasked with coordinating household waste collection and transportation in the Phan Thiet area to prevent pollution and maintain urban aesthetics.

The waste processing plant project, with a total investment of over 495 billion VND and a designed capacity of 400 tons of waste per day, was intended to replace the Binh Tu landfill and process some of the waste from the former Ham Thuan Nam district. Although the investment certificate was granted in 2015 and construction began in 2016, the plant only started operating in 10/2023.

Since its operation, the plant has not processed the promised amount of waste and has not operated at its designed capacity. This has resulted in a significant backlog of waste and environmental impacts. Binh Thuan Province has repeatedly requested corrective action, but the company has not complied.
