Phu Quoc is set to complete a significant upgrade to its power grid, with three crucial projects nearing completion. These projects aim to establish a robust, interconnected 110 kV power system, significantly improving supply stability and preparing the island for the upcoming APEC 2027 Summit.

The three projects, with a combined investment of nearly 2,165 billion VND, include the Phu Quoc 220 kV transformer station, the Phu Quoc - South Phu Quoc 110 kV line, and the Phu Quoc - North Phu Quoc 110 kV line. The 220 kV transformer station boasts a capacity of 2x250 MVA and features 18 km of transmission lines, costing 878 billion VND. The Phu Quoc - South Phu Quoc 110 kV line comprises 17 km of overhead lines and 2,6 km of underground cables crossing the airport, with an investment of 934 billion VND. The Phu Quoc - North Phu Quoc 110 kV line extends 21 km and consists of two circuits, costing 353 billion VND.

These projects are crucial for addressing previous vulnerabilities in Phu Quoc's power supply. Previously, the special zone received electricity from two 110 kV sources: the Phu Quoc 110 kV transformer station via the Ha Tien - Phu Quoc underground cable line, and the South Phu Quoc 110 kV transformer station via the Kien Binh - Phu Quoc 220 kV line. However, these two sources were not interconnected, meaning that an issue with one source would impact the island's overall power supply capacity.

A notable incident occurred in 11/2025 when the Ha Tien - Phu Quoc 110 kV underground cable line was damaged due to piling work by a coastal road construction unit. This incident affected approximately 30,000 households and numerous tourism facilities. The power sector subsequently restored power temporarily by erecting offshore power poles and connecting overhead lines to the underground cable system.

According to Southern Power Corporation, construction on the island presented several challenges, including erratic weather, difficult material transport from the mainland, and a highly saline marine environment. Additionally, the projects faced difficulties with compensation and site clearance. To date, this work is largely complete, allowing contractors to accelerate progress towards completion.

Upon completion, the entire special zone's power system will be interconnected, increasing the total power supply capacity to 315 MVA. This upgrade will meet the increasing power demand of the "pearl island", especially in preparation for APEC 2027.

Mr. Dao Hoa Binh, Deputy General Director of Southern Power Corporation, stated that the goal is to energize all three projects before 19/8. This will be followed by calibration and adjustment to ensure power supply safety, making the system ready for the APEC 2027 Summit.
