Research on preserving mass graves of nearly 600 martyrs in Le Thi Rieng Park

Ho Chi Minh City will study designating the area where nearly 600 martyrs' remains were discovered in Le Thi Rieng Park for protection, constructing a memorial, and creating a historical relic dossier.

Ho Chi Minh City is moving to preserve two mass grave sites in Le Thi Rieng Park, Hoa Hung ward, where authorities recently uncovered the remains of nearly 600 martyrs. The city's People's Committee has assigned the Department of Culture and Sports to lead a survey and assessment of these sites.

Following the survey, the cultural sector will compile a scientific dossier. If the findings provide sufficient grounds, the city will seek approval from central agencies to propose the site for national relic status. Plans also include designating the area for protection, constructing a memorial, an introductory plaque, and other appropriate facilities.

The search and collection of martyrs' remains in Le Thi Rieng Park began in early July. Over two months, authorities located nearly 600 sets of remains in two mass graves situated near the park's traditional house.

These burial pits measure approximately 30-40 m in length and are more than 3 m deep. The Ho Chi Minh City High Command believes many of the remains belong to Saigon soldiers and commandos who perished during the Tet Offensive of 1968.

During the survey, dossier preparation, and conservation plan development, the park's management unit is required to maintain the current state of the grave sites. Any relocation, renovation, construction, or activities that could impact the historical value of the area are strictly prohibited without authorization.
