The project is identified as crucial infrastructure for Phu Quoc, especially as the city prepares to host the APEC 2027 Summit. Sun Group will invest in the first phase of the light rail transit (lrt) line under a build-operate-transfer (BOT) model. Completion is anticipated by Quarter II/2027, ensuring operation before the APEC 2027 events.
The lrt system spans nearly 18 km, running parallel to the 10-lane provincial road DT 975. These two developments will directly link Phu Quoc International Airport with APEC Boulevard, leading to the APEC convention and exhibition center. This ensures convenient connectivity for international events.

The lrt line is designed for speeds of 70-100 km/h and a capacity of 4,500 passengers per hour. Its route adheres to smart traffic standards, optimizing both travel speed and operational efficiency. The train will cover 0,78 km on elevated tracks, 14,81 km at ground level, and 2 km underground.
The project features a total of 6 stations: five ground-level and one underground station at the APEC convention center. The airport hosts the first station, while the final station boasts an 8 m width to accommodate large passenger volumes. Intermediate stations also include 6 m wide platforms, tailored to the operational requirements of each specific area.
The airport station is conveniently situated at the parking lot, ensuring quick passenger access. All other stations will feature underground pedestrian tunnels connecting both sides of the road, complete with stairs, escalators, and elevators for disabled access. This design enhances passenger safety and underscores the commitment to developing a modern, international-standard public transportation system.

Sun Group stands as one of Phu Quoc's most significant infrastructure investors. Before the lrt, the group secured approval to expand Phu Quoc International Airport, with a goal of increasing its capacity to 50 million passengers annually. Their portfolio also includes the APEC convention and exhibition center and a multi-purpose performance venue.
The lrt system is expected to alleviate rapidly increasing traffic pressure in Phu Quoc. Recent years have seen a continuous rise in tourist numbers to the island, causing localized congestion on major roads, particularly during peak seasons.
A Sun Group representative stated that the lrt line will establish a backbone transportation route, connecting various functional areas without contributing to an increase in private vehicles. This transition will enable the city to gradually adopt a public transportation model, promoting energy savings and environmental friendliness. It also aligns with Phu Quoc's smart city development goals and the long-term vision pursued by the special economic zone and An Giang province.
Beyond its transportation significance, the lrt is also anticipated to enhance the tourism experience considerably. With direct connectivity from the airport to integrated resorts, entertainment complexes, event squares, and the convention center, the urban railway line offers an ideal mode of transport for international visitors, who typically seek fast and stable travel options.
