Dong Hoi Airport is currently operating at over 50% of its design capacity, with a passenger volume of about 500,000 annually. This figure is expected to reach 1 million by 2025.
To meet passenger demand, the Terminal 2 construction project commenced on 19/4 and is expected to be completed in Quarter IV/2026. The project, with an investment of over 1,750 billion VND, is being implemented by Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV).
Upon completion of Terminal 2, Dong Hoi Airport will be able to accommodate 3 million passengers per year.
During his two-day working visit to Quang Tri province on 26-27/7, the prime minister inspected several key projects and worked with the provincial Standing Committee. He highlighted Quang Tri's unique characteristics.
Quang Tri has 76,041 martyrs who sacrificed their lives and are buried in the province, the highest number in the country. "We must not be discouraged or sorrowful because of this; on the contrary, we must see this as a distinction. The province must replan so that when people come to pay their respects, they have places to stay, rest, eat, and access sanitary facilities. This will benefit the province," he said.

Regarding the climate, the prime minister noted that Quang Tri's distinct brand is its sun and wind. While previously feared, these elements now offer a significant advantage for developing renewable energy.
Another advantage is Quang Tri's location as the narrowest point of the country, facilitating international connections. The province has all forms of transportation, including Dong Hoi Airport and the Gio Linh Airport under construction, My Thuy deep-water port, and both new and old railway lines. It also has National Highway 1, the Ho Chi Minh Highway, and an expressway.
The prime minister directed Quang Tri to complete the North-South Expressway and coastal road projects, expedite the My Thuy port project, and research the planning and development of a free trade zone and specialized port at My Thuy. He also urged research on a railway line from My Thuy port to Lao Bao border gate, connecting with Laos, Thailand, and the trans-Asia railway.

To connect the road between My Thuy port with the North-South Expressway and the Lao Bao and La Lay border gates, the prime minister requested Quang Tri province to urgently invest in the Cam Lo - Lao Bao expressway through public-private partnerships. He also asked for investment in the 92 km National Highway 15D connecting My Thuy port to La Lay border gate, with a 4-lane expressway scale using various forms of funding, including increased revenue and cost savings.
Quang Tri province covers an area of 12,700 km2 with a population of over 1.8 million and 78 commune-level administrative units. The province has three international border gates: Lao Bao, La Lay, and Cha Lo, and two deep-water ports: Hon La and My Thuy. It also has five border gate economic zones and coastal economic zones, including Hon La, Southeast Quang Tri, Cha Lo, Lao Bao, and La Lay.
