Cuong, a member of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee's Standing Board, was elected vice chairman of the People's Committee for the 2021-2026 term by the city's People's Council on 24/7. He is the seventh vice chairman since the city's merger.
The new vice chairman, originally from An Giang province, holds a master's degree in economics. He rose through the ranks of the Youth Union and Youth Association, serving as secretary and permanent deputy secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union and president of the city's Student Association. Before his role as head of the city's Mobilization Committee, he was secretary of districts 5 and Thu Duc and head of the city Party Committee's Office.

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee's Standing Board for the 2021-2026 term has 8 members, with Nguyen Van Duoc as chairman. The vice chairmen are Nguyen Loc Ha, 51, Nguyen Van Tho, 57, Nguyen Van Dung, 53, Bui Xuan Cuong, 50, Bui Minh Thanh, 54, Nguyen Manh Cuong, 46, and Tran Thi Dieu Thuy, 48.
After its recent restructuring and merger, Ho Chi Minh City now covers over 6,700 km2, 3.25 times larger than before, with a population of around 15 million, making it a new megacity for the region and the country. The administrative center is located in Ho Chi Minh City and has been operating since 1/7. The new Ho Chi Minh City leads the nation in GDP and budget contributions. In the first 6 months of the year, the city collected over 322,000 billion VND.
