Residents secure property ahead of typhoon Wipha

Residents in Hai Phong, Thanh Hoa, Ninh Binh are securing roofs, taping windows, erecting windbreaks, and hauling boats ashore in preparation for Typhoon Wipha.

At area 295, Do Son ward – close to the sea, where strong winds are already blowing, dozens of wooden boards cover the glass windows of a restaurant to protect it from the storm.

Typhoon Wipha is expected to make landfall in northern Vietnam around 10 a.m. tomorrow, directly impacting the area from Hai Phong to Thanh Hoa.

At Zone 1 in Do Son (Hai Phong City), a car dealership on Dien Bien Phu Street used bamboo poles and tape to secure large glass windows against the anticipated strong winds.

Employees of a karaoke bar near Do Son beach used cloth to seal the gaps around windows, preventing wind and water from entering.

The family of Tran Dat, in Do Son ward, used an excavator to secure their metal roof, fearing it might be blown away as it was during Typhoon Yagi.

In Sam Son ward (Thanh Hoa), residents reinforced their homes with sandbags and secured doors against strong winds and potential flooding. Many businesses closed on the night of 20/7, following the government's typhoon preparation instructions.

Mr. Dung, a shop owner near Do Son beach, stated that after Typhoon Yagi, residents are no longer complacent and always secure their homes and property whenever a typhoon is forecast.

Police, militia, youth union members, and other forces assisted fishermen in moving their boats to Ho Xuan Huong Road (Sam Son ward) for safety.

Lieutenant Colonel Trinh Tu Vuong (right) and Major Nguyen Huu Long, from the Sam Son Border Guard Station, helped fishermen secure their boats at the Lach Hoi storm shelter.

Lieutenant Colonel Vuong reported that 100% of the station's personnel were on duty for the typhoon. All fishing boats from Sam Son were safely moored in the shelter before the provincial sea ban was issued on the morning of 21/7.

At Ninh Co port (Ninh Binh), typhoon preparations are underway. The port has two mooring areas with a capacity of more than 200 vessels.

According to the Ninh Binh Fisheries – Fishery Surveillance Sub-Department, the province has 1,861 fishing boats with 5,724 crew members. As of 4 p.m. on 20/7, 1,695 boats and 5,232 crew members had returned to shore to avoid Typhoon Wipha, with the remainder expected to arrive soon.

This morning, Bach Long Vy special district experienced heavy rain and strong winds. Authorities have moved boats ashore. Despite the weather, residents continued to secure small boats next to concrete pillars to prevent damage from impacts.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting stated that after entering the Gulf of Tonkin on the morning of 21/7, the typhoon may intensify to levels 10-11, with gusts up to level 14, as it approaches the Hai Phong - Thanh Hoa coastal area. The typhoon is expected to bring heavy rain, exceeding 600 mm in some areas, particularly in Northeast Vietnam, the mountainous regions of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, and Ha Tinh.
