‘Shark Jaw’ building demolition complete

After a month of construction, the six-story "Shark Jaw" building and two electrical substations have been dismantled and relocated to expand Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc square.

The area of the former "Shark Jaw" building is still fenced off for site clearance and to accommodate scaffolding for the renovation of the Hanoi Trading Corporation - Hapro building (number 7-9 Dinh Tien Hoang street). The renovation is being carried out on the side adjacent to the former "Shark Jaw" building and the facade facing Hoan Kiem lake.

Another project in phase 1 of the Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc square expansion project is the Thuy Ta restaurant, located next to Hoan Kiem lake. The gable end (not part of the original architecture) is currently being removed. The two-story building is expected to be restored to its original, nearly 90-year-old architecture, featuring an Asian-Eastern design with a curved roof and round pillars extending down to the lake.

The parking lot on Dinh Tien Hoang street has been relocated, the road resurfaced, and the median strip repaired and reinstalled to reorganize traffic.

In phase 2, the city plans to explore solutions for developing the underground space of Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc square. They will continue renovating the first layer of buildings surrounding the square and overhaul the technical infrastructure to befit Hoan Kiem lake's status as a special national relic.

The demolition of the "Shark Jaw" building and the renovation of Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc square are part of the city's overall plan to expand public spaces around Hoan Kiem lake.

Along with the renovation of Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc square, Hanoi authorities are also planning and renovating the eastern area of Hoan Kiem lake to increase public and open spaces for the community.

The city aims to complete phase 1 of the Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc square renovation and the relocation of the structures east of Hoan Kiem lake by September 2nd. However, the renovation of the eastern area of Hoan Kiem lake has not yet commenced.

Hoan Kiem lake, spanning 12 hectares, is situated amidst Dinh Tien Hoang, Hang Khay, and Le Thai To streets. The surrounding area is home to numerous agencies, businesses, historical sites, and scenic spots, including the special national relic complex of Hoan Kiem Lake - Ngoc Son Temple and the national relic of Ba Kieu Temple.
