Initially 40 cm deep and less than 1 m wide, the sinkhole now measures over 6 m across and 1.5 m deep at its deepest point. It has caused the collapse of a resident's concrete yard and is filled with water, sitting precariously close to the edge of National Highway 21B. The Thuong Coc commune authorities have already used six truckloads of soil and one of gravel to fill it, but the material has been washed away.
A representative from the Economic Department stated that they are working to fill the sinkhole. If the material continues to be washed away, they will consult with specialists for a more permanent solution. For now, the area has been cordoned off.
The former Lac Son district has two main soil types: yellow-red soil developed on shale, mainly distributed in hilly areas, and eroded soil with exposed gravel and rocks. The area also contains several mineral water mines and groundwater sources.
