TP HCM relocates over 400 trees for Ben Thanh - Tham Luong metro line

The city clears over 400 trees along several roads from the city center to the northwestern gateway, making way for the construction of metro line two, Ben Thanh - Tham Luong section.

On 13/4, workers cut down and relocated numerous large monkey pod trees (rain trees) along Truong Chinh street, near the Pham Van Bach intersection (Tan Son ward). These trees, some with a diameter of about one meter and standing 20-30 m high with wide canopies, are being moved to facilitate the construction of the S10 - Pham Van Bach underground station for the metro line.

The tree removal began about two days ago. The construction area is fenced off, with personnel continuously stationed to direct and reroute traffic, ensuring safety and minimizing congestion. Previously, the Truong Chinh - Pham Van Bach intersection was closed for underground station construction, with vehicles rerouted 200 m away.

Beyond this area, the project plans to clear approximately 453 trees along Le Lai, Truong Dinh, Pham Hong Thai, and Cach Mang Thang Tam streets. Of these, 404 trees will be cut down, while the remainder will be relocated. This work will be carried out in two phases, with a total estimated cost of about 1.4 billion VND.

The Ben Thanh - Tham Luong metro line stretches nearly 11.3 km, connecting the city center to the northwestern area, with over 9 km running underground. This project has a total investment of over 55 trillion VND, began construction in mid-January, and is expected to be completed in 2030. It is the second metro line for TP HCM, following the Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien line, which commenced operations in late 2024.

According to the Management Board for Urban Railways of TP HCM, the underground stations for the Ben Thanh - Tham Luong metro line are located in densely populated areas, which contain extensive underground and above-ground technical infrastructure such as: electricity, water, and telecommunications. Therefore, alongside tree management, the relocation and re-establishment of these systems have been continuously underway to prepare the construction site.
