Tran Duc Thang appointed secretary of Hanoi Party Committee

Tran Duc Thang, minister of agriculture and environment, has been mobilized and assigned by the Politburo to serve as secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee for the 2025-2030 term.

The conference announcing the Politburo's decision took place on the afternoon of 8/4. Tran Duc Thang succeeds Nguyen Duy Ngoc, who was assigned by the Politburo to serve as head of the Central Organization Commission.

Tran Duc Thang, 53, is from Phu Tho. He holds a Doctor of Economics degree and is a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party for the 13th and 14th terms, a member of the Politburo for the 14th term, and a National Assembly deputy for the 16th term.

He worked for 23 years at the Ministry of Finance (from 1995 to 2018), serving as head of the Public Asset Management Department before moving to the Central Inspection Commission.

From 6/2020 to 1/2021, he served as deputy chairman of the Central Inspection Commission for the 12th term, concurrently director of Central Department one, under the Central Inspection Commission.

In 1/2021, at the 13th National Congress of the Communist Party, he was elected a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party for the 13th term. He then served as secretary of the Hai Duong Provincial Party Committee before becoming standing deputy inspector general of the Government Inspectorate (from 17/6/2025).

On 25/10/2025, at the 10th session, the 15th National Assembly passed a resolution appointing him as minister of agriculture and environment for the 2021-2026 term. At the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party, he was elected a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party for the 16th term and, one day later, was elected to the Politburo.

The Hanoi Party Committee currently has 4 deputy secretaries: Vu Dai Thang, 51; Nguyen Van Phong, 58; Nguyen Trong Dong, 57; and Phung Thi Hong Ha, 55.
