Tree felling on road claims motorcyclist's life

A 7-8 meter Xa Cu tree, being cut at its base, unexpectedly fell onto a provincial road, fatally striking a 68-year-old motorcyclist.

At approximately 8:20 AM on 9/9, Nguyen Quang Tho, 43, from Quang Binh commune, was hired by Nguyen Quang Hao's family to fell a Xa Cu tree in front of house 295 on provincial road 511, passing through Hien Tay village.

The Xa Cu tree, approximately 60 cm in diameter and 7-8 meters tall, was dead. As Tho used a chainsaw to cut its base close to the ground, the tree unexpectedly toppled onto the roadway, precisely as Le Dinh Thanh, 68, also from Quang Binh commune, was passing by on his motorbike.

The tree's top and branches struck Thanh, causing both him and his motorbike to fall onto the road. The victim was rushed to Quang Lu Medical Station for emergency care but died.

Dashcam footage from a car passing the scene revealed that at the time the tree was being felled, the provincial road still had numerous cars and motorbikes circulating. There were no advance warnings to prevent vehicles from entering the tree-felling area.

Trinh Thi Nguyen, Chairperson of the Quang Binh Commune People's Committee, stated that the Traffic Police, the Forensic Technical Department of Thanh Hoa Provincial Police, and the People's Procuracy Area 2 examined the scene and the body to investigate the cause.

Police have summoned the homeowner and the individual hired to fell the tree to clarify their responsibilities related to the incident.
