Truck driver trapped for 9 hours after 70-meter plunge

A truck driver was trapped in his cabin for nearly 9 hours after his container truck plunged 70 meters down a ravine in Dakrong Commune (Quang Tri).

Around 8 PM on 17/7, Nguyen Trung The, 35, from Tran Phu Commune, Hai Phong City, was driving a container truck from Lao Bao International Border Gate towards Dong Ha. In Dakrong Commune, the truck crashed through the roadside barrier and plummeted approximately 70 meters into a ravine. The truck slid a considerable distance, uprooting trees before coming to rest near a stream.

The front of the truck was crushed, trapping the injured driver inside the cabin under debris. The road was dry at the time of the accident, but the lack of lighting and the difficult terrain hampered rescue efforts.

Local police and residents quickly cleared a path to the scene. Rescuers rappelled down the ravine, cleared debris, created ventilation holes, and broke the truck's windows to reach the driver.

After extracting the driver from the cabin, rescuers secured him on a stretcher and used a pulley system to lift him out of the ravine. At 4:30 AM on 18/7, he was taken to the hospital.

The accident caused several hours of traffic disruption on National Highway 9 through Dakrong Commune.
