Two men die from gas suffocation in manhole

Two men died and one was hospitalized after being overcome by gas while working in a manhole at a construction site in Da Phuc commune on the morning of 18/6.

Three men were overcome by gas while working in a manhole at a construction site in Da Phuc commune on the morning of 18/6.

According to local authorities, the men had descended into the manhole to dismantle formwork. Residents discovered the incident and brought the victims to the surface. Two of the men were pronounced dead at the scene, while the third was rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment. By the afternoon, his condition was stable and not life-threatening.

Leaders of Da Phuc commune confirmed that all three victims were local residents. Authorities are currently investigating the exact cause of the incident.

Manholes are integral parts of drainage systems, typically located underground with enclosed spaces and limited air circulation. According to experts, such environments can accumulate toxic gases or experience oxygen deficiency, particularly in areas containing wastewater, sludge, and decomposing organic matter.

When workers enter manholes or similar confined spaces without first checking air quality, they face a high risk of rapid suffocation and loss of consciousness.
