Van Don and Cat Bi airports suspend operations

On 21/7, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam decided to temporarily suspend aircraft operations at Cat Bi Airport (Hai Phong) and Van Don Airport (Quang Ninh) due to the impact of Typhoon Wipha.

Van Don and Cat Bi airports will suspend flight operations from 11 PM on 21/7 to 12 PM on 22/7. All flights will be canceled, and passengers will be rescheduled after the airports reopen.

Authorities at Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi) and Tho Xuan Airport (Thanh Hoa) are also monitoring weather reports to develop appropriate operational plans.

At the Wipha typhoon preparedness meeting on 21/7, representatives from several affected airports reported on plans to move aircraft to safe locations, reinforce structures, and secure ground equipment in preparation for all possible scenarios.

Deputy Director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, Ho Minh Tan, requested all units to review and agree on an action plan to ensure absolute safety for flight operations, passengers, aircraft, equipment, and airport infrastructure.

Airports have been asked to focus resources on preventing damage from the typhoon to the airport’s technical infrastructure and parked aircraft, paying particular attention to the drainage systems to prevent flooding.

Due to Typhoon Wipha, on 21/7, Vietnam Airlines canceled 5 flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Hai Phong, and Vietjet Air canceled 8 flights to and from Quang Ninh and Hai Phong. On 22/7, Vietnam Airlines Group flights operating at Cat Bi Airport will depart after 12 PM. Many domestic and international flights on 21/7 and 22/7 will experience knock-on effects.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, at 4 PM on 21/7, the typhoon’s center was approximately 100 km from Quang Ninh and 220 km east of Hai Phong. Winds near the typhoon's center were at level 9-10, with gusts reaching level 12, moving west-southwest at approximately 15 km/h.

Airports in the affected area, including Noi Bai, Cat Bi, Van Don, and Tho Xuan, experienced light rain with visibility of 6-8 km.
